While 94% of life on Earth is aquatic, only 5% of the world’s oceans have been explored. Exploration is the key to expanding our understanding of and connection to our oceans. There is much left to discover about our oceans that can impact human life in many ways. OceanX will lead the charge in exploring this next frontier. Our work aims to inspire people around the world to have a deep and personal connection with the oceans. OceanX shares compelling stories through various platforms, including digital channels, television series, Giant Screen films, immersive experiences in museums and science centers, live broadcasts, etc.

Our flagship vessel, Alucia 2, will be an unparalleled state-of-the-art resource for ocean research and educational media.


This position within OceanX is a key member of the management team with responsibility for all aspects of mission planning, logistics, and execution. The Mission Manager will work as a close partner with the Vice-Chairman, the Chief Operating Officer, the Chief Vessel Officer, and the Managing and Creative Directors of OceanX Media to shape and evolve the Initiative. The position will report to the Chief Operating Officer and will be responsible to the Vice-Chairman for maximizing vessel impact and utilization by developing missions that align with the Initiative’s overriding goals of charismatic science, cutting edge technology, and compelling media. The Mission Manager will also ensure that missions are executed in an excellent and repeatable way, addressing any issues or risks that arise in a proactive manner.

The Mission Manager is responsible for the entire mission lifecycle from ideation through post mission review. Mission Management will be at the hub of science, media, and vessel operations, helping to orchestrate those teams as well as external partners in these domains. The individual will manage several direct reports and external service providers to plan and execute missions, and to maintain a strong pipeline of mission ideas. As such, excellent communication and leadership skills will be essential to the role.

The position requires a highly organized approach and calls for effective management and planning skills. It is expected that the successful candidate will demonstrate a track record in complex project, program, and operational management and will ideally have experience in marine or exploration related fields.


The Mission Manager will ensure the goals of the Initiative are met by:

  • Working as a key member of the OceanX management team to shape the Initiative and to orchestrate the mission related components of its strategy.

  • Managing the full mission lifecycle.

  • Owning the development and operation of mission-related processes and systems.

  • Orchestrating activities to ensure a full roster of missions that align to the Initiative vision.

  • Ensuring balance and synergy among science, media and vessel operations aspects of the overall mission portfolio and each individual mission.

  • Monitoring and communicating mission status, including escalation of key risks and issues.

  • Providing oversight and direction to direct and indirect reports.


The ideal professional qualifications and personal attributes the Mission Manager ought to possess are the following:

Professional Experience:

  • Approximately 10 years of experience in a similar organization or domain, including project, program, and operational management.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and run complex projects and operations in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong verbal and written communication and leadership skills.

  • Degree educated, preferably to master’s level.

Personal Attributes:

  • Highly organized and forward-thinking.

  • Ability to help develop, shape and evolve ideas into a world class operation.

  • Self-aware, reflective and able to learn from mistakes.

  • Ability to think strategically.

  • Ability to deal with ambiguity.

  • Machine-like approach to design and planning.

  • Perceptive of existing and potential problems.

  • Strong work ethic and willingness to travel to global mission locations.
