About the Johnny Morris Conservation Foundation

Johnny Morris founded Bass Pro Shops in 1972. Mr. Morris is also the founder of the White River Marine Group and opened the Wonders of Wildlife Museum & Aquarium in Springfield, in 2017. In September 2017, Bass Pro acquired Cabela’s, another retailer of outdoor merchandise. The company also operates Big Cedar Lodge, America’s Premier Wilderness Resort, welcoming more than one million guests annually to Missouri’s Ozark Mountains. The three pillars of impact, which drive the Johnny Morris Conservation Foundation, are:

  • Connecting new audiences to the outdoors – including connecting diverse communities that currently engage in the outdoor sports at lower levels and returning servicemen and women through healing outdoor experiences.

  • Conserving wildlife and habitat for future generations – working with many partners all aligned on the North American Model of Conservation to ensure future generations experience these wonderful places.

  • Advocating for sportsmen & sportswomen. This includes access issues and ensuring that funding for our natural resources remains a priority.

The means for creating impact, include:

  • Bass Pro Shops & Cabela’s company giving, vendor partnerships, and in-store events.

  • The Johnny Morris’s Wonders of Wildlife and the conservation attractions which welcomes more than 1.5 million visitors a year.

  • The Outdoor Fund – The 501 (C)3 that raises funds to support conservation efforts by activating more than 200 million passionate sportsmen and women rounding up their purchases in Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s stores.

Executive Director

The Executive Director should be an individual who possesses a demonstrated humility and a capacity to work with Johnny Morris, his family, Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Team Members, vendors, and partners. The Executive Director will serve as Johnny’s advisor and serve to facilitate his vision and legacy in conservation stewardship and outdoor recreation. The Executive Director will expand the reach and impact of the Johnny Morris Conservation Foundation through interactions with public, private, philanthropic and civil society leaders and organizations. The Executive Director should be an individual who thrives on fostering the love and enjoyment of our natural resources.

Because so much of what the Executive Director does involves communicating Johnny Morris’s vision and building relationships with grantees, investees, public sector, nonprofit and corporate leaders, the Executive Director must have the presence, grace and interpersonal skills to work effectively and professionally with a diverse range of people from different sectors of society. The Executive Director will work to help shape and support Johnny’s conservation vision and work with Johnny, family members, and others to develop and implement programs, initiatives and partnerships to support Johnny’s conservation legacy. This individual will also be asked to fulfill the following overarching goals:

  • Serve to support Johnny’s conservation leadership and vision.

  • Provide support to company and other key stakeholders in addressing a range of program initiatives and opportunities, including fundraising and building enduring partnerships.

  • Plan, prepare and present materials for all Johnny Morris Conservation Foundation meetings, including proposal review, grant and financial reporting, and strategic planning, and oversee follow-up activities.

  • Help establish a long-term structure of with various corporate entities and initiatives to ensure that decisions being made today will lead to a structure that makes sense in the long-term.

  • Provide support for special family initiatives and interests.

The Executive Director should ideally possess the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:

Professional Qualifications

  • The ability to serve as a strategic partner and execute in dynamic, entrepreneurial family enterprise.

  • The ability to move from thought to action.

  • A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.

  • Able to educate, actively listen and facilitate alignment so that there is a sense of partnership and common purpose; able to see all sides of an issue and prioritize and balance competing interests.

  • Demonstrated record of setting operational priorities and leading teams to success.

  • Media savvy and high level of comfort using myriad media tools and outlets to communicate an organization’s message to all corners of the community.

  • Knowledge of the strategies and mechanics of grantmaking and an overall understanding of new strategic approaches shaping the philanthropic sector.

  • Enthusiastic about the position and committed to the mission, values and purpose of the Johnny Morris Conservation Foundation.

  • An engaging presence, possessing political savvy and a demonstrated track record of success communicating effectively with people from different sectors of society.
