Fly Fishers International (FFI) has been an organized voice for fly fishers around the world since 1964. They represent all aspect of fly fishing –from the art of fly tying and casting, to protection of the natural systems that support healthy fisheries and their habitats so essential to the sport. Today, their mission is to ensure the legacy of fly fishing for all fish in all waters continues by focusing on conservation, education and a sense of community.

FFI is driven by three fundamental pillars: Conservation, Education, and Community. Together, these pillars provide the FFI for the vision of the future of fly fishing — a future in which anglers have access to prime waters and fish can thrive in healthy, protected habitats; in which learning never stops and artistry is not forgotten; and that recognizes the true value of camaraderie. Fly Fishers International, as a conservation and education organization, desires to make a transition from a dedicated group of volunteer leaders, to an organization focused on optimizing its volunteer contributions and enhancing the work of staff through stewardship and professional leadership.

About the Position

The President and EO will be a leader who inspires the organization to engage in a deeply worthwhile mission. The President and EO will possess the skills to continue developing and leading the organization’s strategic direction and enhance FFI’s organizational vitality. The President and EO will possess an authentic alignment to the core values of FFI and engage staff, partners, funders and other stakeholders.

The President and EO will also be forward looking, seeing opportunities to create new ways to ensure that FFI’s work is significant and impactful. In addition, the President and EO will work to continue to enhance the governance and leadership capabilities of the Board and the professional opportunities for staff. In the role as President and EO, this individual should bring an abundance of energy, drive and excitement to grow FFI’s philanthropic resources – reaching out to individuals, institutions and companies. In that regard, the President and EO needs to express an excitement, and commitment to FFI’s mission and core values.

The President and EO will be a person who has a keen desire to develop sustainable partnerships with nonprofits, corporations, foundations and individual donors to advance FFI’s education/conservation mission. In addition, the President and EO will work with the Board Chair and volunteer leaders to enhance the governance and strategic direction of FFI.

The broad goals for the President and EO are as follows:

  • Provide leadership in evolving and implementing FFI’s organizational vision, mission and strategic priorities.

  • Support the development of a vibrant future by continuing to cultivate, expand and make the best use of FFI's Board, volunteer leaders, staff and members.

  • Continue to expand the financial base of FFI pursuing philanthropic funding sources and other creative sources of revenue for the organization.

  • Retain, attract and manage a team of professional staff who possess the capacity to fulfill the organization's mission.

  • Expand the reach, influence and public recognition of FFI as a trusted education/conservation organization.

  • Build an organization which can fully optimize the wealth of experience and knowledge of the Board and partners.

  • Provide critical stewardship of FFI’s staff and financial assets.

Professional Qualifications and Personal Attributes

The President and EO ideally should possess the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:

Professional Qualifications:

  • Capacity to lead, inspire and mobilize people -- particularly leaders, volunteers, and other supporters -- in advancing the vision of a vibrant, education-focused non-profit.

  • Flexible, goal-oriented management style; respecting the capabilities and independence of volunteers and staff alike and providing a clear sense of direction.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and administering a comprehensive fundraising program including individual donor, corporate and foundation solicitation, capital campaign activities, direct mail, and other revenue generating programs.

  • Experience building effective networks, partnerships, and/or coalitions.

  • Bachelor's degree required with an advanced degree or equivalent experience preferred.

  • Strong work ethic and willingness to travel extensively, often for weekend and evening engagements.

  • Proven record of success guiding a business or nonprofit enterprise and a deep familiarity with the budgeting processes.

Personal Attributes:

  • Passionate commitment to the values and mission of FFI and a demonstrated conservation ethic.

  • Personal creativity and strategic vision coupled with an ability to listen to others and learn from their best ideas – a sense of inquisitiveness and intellectual curiosity.

  • Ability to inspire trust, lead and facilitate with strong interpersonal skills and move from ideas to action.

  • A team builder and an individual committed to collaboration - a superb professional and personal presence.

  • Personable, articulate, and diplomatic.


Compensation for the President and EO includes a competitive base salary, and a package of health and employee benefits.
