About Earth Alliance:

Earth Alliance is a groundbreaking new global enterprise to activate and mobilize a global response to the urgent threats to our planet’s life support systems. It is born out of the shared passion of its founding co-chairs: environmental activist and Academy Award®-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio, businesswoman and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, and investor and philanthropist Brian Sheth. The founders of Earth Alliance believe that the power to change hearts and minds can be a great galvanizing force in the battle to fight climate change. Earth Alliance’s mission, at its highest level, is to preserve and protect our global community. We can do this by coordinating the power and commitments of organizations and people around the planet to galvanize action.

Earth Alliance will coordinate with and provide support for the leading global and grassroots changemakers, working at high impact and at high scale in local communities and around the world. Through an advisory board, Earth Alliance will work together to identify, support and grow solutions in key countries on the most pressing climate issues. Earth Alliance will regularly communicate with global changemakers to share information, make meaningful connections, educate and raise awareness. Moreover, Earth Alliance will also convene an annual hallmark global event centered around ways to accelerate solutions through shared investment, policy, research, academic and philanthropic work. Equally important to its changemakers will be grassroots movements. Earth Alliance will map, activate and support grassroots movements within the founders’ networks and the networks of key partners.

Earth Alliance will act as a watchdog and emergency response team to vet when a crisis necessitates action, to raise attention, fundraise and issue a call to action when necessary. Earth Alliance will enact fundraising appeals and identify partners who can effectively disperse funds in-country and on the ground. Earth Alliance brings different forces together to create a diverse worldwide movement; cultural awareness will be its secret power. Earth Alliance will tell compelling stories loudly and at scale, to connect with and inspire the masses to push nations, local leaders, governments, corporations, the press and people everywhere to pay attention so they can’t look away and hide.

About the Position

The Executive Director will be a dynamic steward and leader who possesses the skills to help shape and implement Earth Alliance’s co-founders’ vision and mission. The Executive Director will facilitate the development of sustainable partnerships with nonprofits, corporations, foundations and individual donors to advance Earth Alliance’s education/conservation mission.

While the Earth Alliance’s strategic programs will be unveiled in the coming months, the Executive Director is committed to a thoughtful approach that builds vital collaborations with, and provides funding to, partners doing important work on the ground. the Executive Director will work to develop a comprehensive communication apparatus to share content broadly. The Executive Director will also be forward looking, seeing opportunities to create new ways to ensure that Earth Alliance’s work is significant and impactful. The Executive Director will work to continue to enhance the governance and leadership capabilities of the Board and identify and recruit a dedicated team of professional staff. In the role of Executive Director, this individual should bring an abundance of energy, drive and excitement to shape Earth Alliance’s innovative and groundbreaking programs.

The Executive Director will also oversee the work of the Amazon Forest Fund. Created as an emergency fund to focus critical resources on the key protections needed to maintain the “lungs of the planet.” These funds are being distributed directly to indigenous communities and other local partners combating the fires, protecting indigenous lands, and providing relief to the communities impacted.

The broad goals for the Executive Director are as follows:

  • Working with the Earth Alliance Founders and partner organizations, lead in developing and implementing the organization’s vision.

  • Support the development of a vibrant future by continuing to cultivate, expand and make the best use of Earth Alliance’s founders, partners, stakeholders, etc.

  • Identify and retain a global and diverse network of individuals to serve on an Advisory Board.

  • Retain, attract and manage a team of professional staff who possess the capacity to fulfill the organization's mission.

  • Expand the reach and impact of Earth Alliance by development of innovative and compelling programs and grantmaking opportunities to protect ecosystems and wildlife, ensure climate justice, support renewable energy and secure indigenous rights.

  • Provide critical stewardship of Earth Alliance’s staff and financial assets.

Professional Qualifications and Personal Attributes

The Executive Director ideally should possess the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:

Professional Qualifications:

  • Capacity to lead, inspire and mobilize people -- particularly leaders, partners and other supporters -- in advancing the vision of a vibrant new enterprise.

  • Executive knowledge and network within the global environmental community.

  • Campaign and issue advocacy experience with a demonstrated experience utilizing all forms of media outreach, strategic communication platforms and other tools to engage in grassroots activism.

  • Flexible, goal-oriented management style.

  • Experience building effective networks, partnerships, and/or coalitions.

  • Strong work ethic and willingness to travel extensively, often for weekend and evening engagements.

  • Proven record of success guiding a start-up venture or nonprofit enterprise and a deep familiarity with the budgeting processes.

Personal Attributes:

  • Passionate commitment to the values and mission of Earth Alliance and a demonstrated conservation ethic.

  • Personal creativity and strategic vision coupled with an ability to listen to others and learn from their best ideas – a sense of inquisitiveness and intellectual curiosity.

Compensation

Compensation for the Executive Director includes a competitive base salary, and a package of health and employee benefits. The Executive Director will ideally be based on the West Coast.
