Science Officer

This is a unique position which has been created to help establish scientific missions aboard the research vessel, the Alucia. The Science Officer will be part of an existing team which combines the Science Program, Media Production (in partnership with Alucia Productions, LLC) and Marine Operations. The position will liaise directly on science matters to the Vice-Chair of the Dalio Ocean Initiative. The Science Officer will run and evolve the science program and will be responsible for outreach to and liaison with scientific and oceanic exploration communities. With the support of a science researcher, the Science Officer will work with external science and research organizations to identify and develop mission ideas. The Science Officer will be closely involved in all stages of the mission lifecycle from ideation to selection, planning, execution and review. The Science Officer will ensure that missions are centered around exciting and important scientific activity by:

  • Developing the required processes (“machines”) to ensure robust and systematic mission identification, development, planning, and review.

  • Leading outreach to scientific and oceanic exploration communities to develop strategic alliances and partnerships.

  • Directing research into global marine science and oceanographic activities to inform mission ideation.

  • Evaluating and recommending science mission proposals and ideas in collaboration with the media team.

  • Overseeing planning and logistical aspects of science missions to ensure enablers are in place in a timely manner, i.e. permitting, scientific equipment and supplies, etc.

  • Liaising with onboard science and technical teams to ensure missions are successfully executed and that the required resources or capabilities are in place.

  • Developing and maintain budgets for science operations and projects.

  • Managing resources within the Alucia Science team.

The Science Officer will be based in Westport, CT, work regularly from New York, and travel to conferences and on various vessels, as required.

Professional Qualifications and Personal Attributes

The ideal professional qualifications and personal attributes the Science Officer should possess are the following:

Professional Experience:

  • A seasoned professional with an established network in this field.

  • Field experience in marine science or oceanographic expeditions would be advantageous.

  • A Master’s degree or Ph.D. in a related scientific field is preferred.

  • Approximately 10 years’ experience in a similar organization or domain.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and run complex projects in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to deal with ambiguity.
